Over 12%, or nearly 14 million women, live below the poverty line in the United States. Women in female-headed households with no spouse fare significantly worse with nearly 25% of this group living in poverty, as compared with only 5.2% of women in married couple families. Domestic violence rates are five times higher among families below poverty levels.
According to a 2007 report by the National Women’s Law Center, an alarmingly high number of young women are dropping out of high school. These young women face higher economic costs than their male counterparts.
The most conservative estimates indicate two to four million women of all races and classes are battered each year. At least 170,000 of those violent incidents are serious enough to require hospitalization, emergency room care or a doctor's attention. Violent juvenile offenders are four times more likely to have grown up in homes where they saw violence.

Bloom Again is operated by Dr. Lois Frankel, author of the international bestsellers Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office, Nice Girls Don't Get Rich, and See Jane Lead, in conjunction with a Board of Directors. The concept was born while Dr. Frankel was being treated for breast cancer and with each day of recovery felt like she was "blooming again." She realized many women and girls need financial assistance to help them "bloom again" after illnesses, leaving abusive relationships, surviving childhood trauma, or were transitioning in other ways so she called on friends and colleagues to help found Bloom Again.
