FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Pasadena, California, March 19, 2010) – Pasadena residents, Dr. Lois Frankel, Dr. Pam Erhardt, and Katherine Wimmer are among the Bloom Again Foundation Board of Directors hosting LUNAFEST – a fundraiser screening short films by and about women.
The event will be held on Thursday, April 29th at Burbank-based Warner Bros., with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. and film screening at 7:30 p.m.  All proceeds go to grants for women who need help with living expenses due to lost wages resulting from personal or family medical emergencies.
“We can’t thank the folks at Warner Bros. enough for providing the perfect venue for our fundraiser,” said Dr. Lois Frankel, Board Chair and founder of Bloom Again Foundation.  Other community support for LUNAFEST comes from Digital Insight, Fidelity Investments, Nestle, and Union Bank.

Included among the films being screened is one directed by Courtney Cox, “The Monday Before Thanksgiving,” starring Laura Dern and Rosemary Harris.  The film focuses on a successful woman (Dern) who is perfectly satisfied with her single status but starts to have doubts about her own happiness when the concerns of her family and friends begin to seem overwhelming.

Recipients of gifts from Bloom Again Foundation are referred by community agencies familiar with women and their circumstances.  Strategic partners include the Dolores Mission in East Los Angeles, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, and The Center for Nonviolent Parenting and Education.

The concept for Bloom Again was born while Dr. Frankel was being treated for breast cancer and realized just how fortunate she was to have the time and money to heal at her own pace, “I thought about all of the women who live paycheck-to-paycheck and knew they didn’t have the same luxury.” After completing chemotherapy when a friend said it looked like she was “blooming again,” Frankel put the wheels in motion to establish a foundation to help economically vulnerable women.

For LUNAFEST tickets visit the Bloom Again Foundation website at http://www.bloomagain.org/ or call Jessica Vaughn at 626.405.7310.  For security reasons, no tickets will be sold the evening of the event.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Pasadena, California, February 26, 2010) -- Bloom Again Foundation, announced today the award of a gift of $1,730.00 to Beatriz Penzon of Los Angeles.

Father Scott, with The Dolores Mission, a strategic partner to Bloom Again, explained her situation. Penzon worked on a lunch truck earning minimum wage. In 2009 her husband lost his job, went to San Francisco seeking work and left her with their six children, from 1-1/2 to 12-years-old. He never returned and Penzon managed by supporting herself and her children until she slipped and fell at work.

She kept working with the painful injury, but was let go when she told the woman running the truck she couldn’t spend so much time on her feet. As a result, she got behind in her rent and was about to be evicted and placed in a shelter with her children. The gift enabled her to catch up on her back rent and pay for an additional month to allow her time to recover and find another job.

When presented with the check, Penzon said, “I am very very grateful.”
